East Coast Sustainable Home Wins Gold with Eldorado Stone
Across the country, builders and architects are embracing sustainable building and design practices more than ever before. The use of eco-friendly products and materials help to create living environments that are not only sensitive to nature, but still achieves the look and feel desired by the original design.
Eldorado Stone is proud to be part of a growing number of award-winning projects that have won the highest levels in sustainable building practices and products available today. Whether it’s a traditional or contemporary design, Eldorado’s versatility and appeal offers an authentic architectural statement while adding the warmth and texture that only stone can provide.
Studio26homes, a design/ build firm dedicated to creating highly efficient, healthy homes, recently completed a 4,700+ sf project in Orefield, PA, about an hour north of Philadelphia. The private residence earned the Gold rating from the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) National Green Building Guidelines certification program as the 19th certified project of any level in the country.
“The goal is to make the world greener and this program through NAHB can be a rigorous process, but ultimately worth the effort to encourage builders to build homes that are more energy efficient and that use products that are eco-friendly,” says Brian Baker, a LEED accredited architect and Certified Green Professional with studio26homes. “To reach the gold standard, we had to earn at least 395 points. This home earned 542 points,” he says.
Baker admits his company had never used Eldorado Stone before this project. “We were looking for a good quality product, manufacturer and supplier,” he says. “We know that we’re only as competent as all the players combined, so we wanted to find a company that had a passion for what they do and who backs up their products should anything arise. In addition, we wanted something that was locally manufactured, offered low maintenance, was competitively priced and featured the geometric shape we wanted. Eldorado Stone’s Castle Stone met all the criteria and we are extremely happy with our choice.”
Baker says the homeowners absolutely love the stone. “It’s not just the stone, it’s the blend of colors and the composition of the stone with the red fiber cement siding and the white trim of the home’s exterior that makes it all come together. Originally, stone was only going to be used on the fireplace and chimney and as a wainscoting up to the window level. However, we suggested a more dramatic application and now the stone accents and complement the home’s risky red color, which is a burnt umber. Because we were able to expand the amount of stone we used, Eldorado became the focal point in its use on the deck’s elevated fireplace, on all the columns and on the first level of the home’s exterior to the top of the windows. Eldorado Stone is also used on two chimneys and the great room fireplace inside.
“Ultimately, we achieved exactly what we wanted with the use of Eldorado,” says Baker. “We got the look we wanted at a price we wanted, obtained our Gold rating as an energy efficient home and have extremely happy homeowners. Who could ask for more?”
