Transitional Oasis

Melding Modern Luxury with Functionality

“Architecture is about nourishing the lives of those sheltered within.”
-Frank Lloyd Wright

The clients of this project were happy in their home and loved their neighborhood, but were ready to move away from their traditional Mediterranean home into something more modern. In need of better apportioned living spaces to help fit the growing needs of their family of four, they turned to interior designer Pauline Hartogh of www.wetherlysinteriors.com to progress their vision of innovative design and functionality. Their dreams were fulfilled when they built a transitional home with a stone-and-stucco façade, clad in Eldorado Stone’s Dry Creek Stacked Stone. The layout of the home is logically divided into three residential wings, all of which are structured in clean, contemporary lines.

The heart of the home was created by connecting the indoors to the outdoors with an open kitchen very close to the summer kitchen outside, enveloping them with the interior breakfast room, family room, and club room as well as the exterior’s covered loggia and swimming pool by using floor-to-ceiling glass. This open focus set the tone for easy entertaining and casual conversation while cooking, relaxing and playing together. The landscape further enhanced the clients’ desire to embrace the indoor/outdoor lifestyle that Florida’s climate offers. Amid warm, tropical landscaping, a Chartes-inspired stone labyrinth provides beauty while also providing a place in their home for meditation and enlightenment.

As a specifier and interior designer, Pauline Hartogh begins work on every project during the initial stage, well before the construction starts. After she envisions the scope of the entire project, she works closely with the architect and builder to specify each and every detail, from the exact materials and products to be used in the building process, to the architectural nuances that will enhance her plan. This allows her to set the complete tone for the full project.

“If I haven’t worked with a builder or client before,” Hartogh mentions, “I may have to go through the exercise of explaining why I request a specific product, especially if it is more expensive than a similar product. Once I lay down the various samples, they see the difference immediately. There may be other products we could use, but Eldorado Stone’s products are absolutely exquisite every time you use them. They are, for me, the most believable and authentic looking stone veneers. Once they are placed next to any other product, the builders and clients always choose the Eldorado Stone product I selected. The joints are seamless, the materials are beautiful, and the look is exact every time.” Hartogh recommends using this side-by-side process with clients to ensure you work with the highest quality product available. Quality products provide the best results, which will provide you with more celebrated projects.

“I feel strongly that the use of Eldorado Stone’s products greatly enriched two of the areas in this project which won design awards,” Hartogh explains. A key feature in the tranquil master bath is the candle wall, which uses stone from the Coastal Reef collection (product: Coastal Reef, color: Pearl white). This room won the American Society of Interior Design Award 2013 – Bathroom Design, Transitional. In addition, Hartogh choose stacked stone (product: Stacked Stone, color: Dry Creek) for the entire exterior, including patio walls and pillars, because she feels it’s a very current look and the Eldorado Stone products allow her to create whatever look she envisions with full flexibility. The use of this product not only helped establish the overall tone for the home but it also allowed for architectural details, which made their mark by winning the American Society of Interior Design Award 2013 – Outdoor Living, Single Family Home.
