Details Matter in This Builder’s Custom Home

What began as a dream in 2004 is now a reality for Greg Pinn, Vice President of Pinn Brothers Fine Homes of San Jose, California. The level of quality and the attention to detail found in every aspect of his 7,000 square foot French Country Chateau is a tribute to the craftsmanship of the professionals who helped build it and the beautiful materials he used inside and out. “We carefully thought through and discussed every single detail about this house until we were sure we got it right,” says Pinn. “When selecting the stone and brick for the home’s exterior, we actually built a full-scale wall that had four different mockups of various stone profiles and colors before we finally selected just the right mix of Eldorado’s Fieldledge and Limestone profiles and the new Bracciano RomaBrick installed with an overgrout technique.”

Pinn says that he had Eldorado Stone in mind from the beginning when the architectural plans were still being drawn. “I’ve worked with Eldorado exclusively now for close to 10 years on all of our projects, and there was no question that we were going to use their stone and brick on this home as well.”

By working with Eldorado, Pinn was able to use the look of natural stone in several places. You will find an extensive use of both stone and brick throughout his yard on retaining walls, around the pook, the outdoor living space, and on all the chimney stacks. He aslo used it on most of the exterior of the home rather than as an occasional accent element because of its affordability and ease of installation compared to natural stone. “I have every confidence in Eldorado and if I ever need to replace a few stones or want to add more, I don’t have to worry about finding similar stone again from the same quarry 20 years from now, but can rely on the consistency and availability of Eldorado no matter what.”

In one case, the plans called to use a pre-cast concrete element on the exterior. Wanting to be as authentic as possible, Pinn utilized more of Eldorado Stone’s RomaBrick instead, which has such an aged, timeless look that it was a much better choice for the project. “My only other option was to have a reclaimed brick shipped from Europe and pay four times as much of the same look I was able to achieve using Eldorado Brick,” he says. “Using Eldorado products has made all the difference in this home.”

In addition to his own high standards, Pinn was required by the City of Saratoga to use only high quality natural slate and stone in this upscale development where the lots alone are worth millions. But when he brought in a mock-up of Eldorado Stone for final approval by the commission, no one realized the difference. “I see that as one of the greatest compliments Eldorado can receive.”
